Let Them Eat (Smith Island) Cake…

… then they can “Walk” off the Calories!

The origin of the “Let Them Eat Cake” comment…

From “The Phrase Finder” http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/227600.html

The origin of many phrases in English are unknown. Nevertheless, many people would say that they know the source of this one. It is widely attributed to Marie-Antoinette (1755-93), the Queen consort of Louis XVI. She is supposed to have said this when she was told that the French populace had no bread to eat.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s 12-volume autobiographical work Confessions, was written in 1770. In Book 6, which was written around 1767, he recalls:
At length I recollected the thoughtless saying of a great princess, who, on being informed that the country people had no bread, replied, “Then let them eat pastry!”

Nevertheless, the French revolutionaries thought even less of her than we do today and she was guillotined to death in 1793 for the crime of treason.

While Marie may not have been as heartless a ruler as the phrase implies, it is wondered how many of the members of the General Assembly would stack up against her in that department. Of course, we would hope that Marylanders would find a more humane solution than the one that befell (actually- just her head be-fell… into a basket) poor Marie.
No, as a certain critic of our esteemed O’Governor found out, threats of violence are not to be tolerated. We have a much more civilized solution… throw the bums out of office!

And if you are going to have cake, how about make it a real party and add some confetti?
Here’s the Speaker of the House’s area after Sine Die last night.

The real party was had later at the Miller building. But what was there to celebrate if you are a Marylander?

Not a whole heck-of-a-lot. Usually here is where we could at least rejoice that we wouldn’t have to worry about them doing any more damage ’til January of ’09, but they could manufacture some mythical crisis and emergency forcing them to call another dreaded “Special Session”. So, we may not even be safe until then.
