T.J. Smith Sued for Pension Fraud

T.J. Smith has been accused of pension fraud, according to a lawsuit filed today in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court.

Anne Arundel County Attorney Jim Braswell has filed suit against Smith today regarding his pension. The complaint alleges that Smith wasted “potentially millions of dollars of taxpayer funds through an illegal and ultra vires agreement between Smith, Anne Arundel County and the Baltimore Police Department” and that Smith “conspired with the Baltimore Police Department to create a sham agreement to allow Smith to collect a full pension from the Anne Arundel County Police Department, despite the fact that Smith failed to work the required twenty (20) years for his pension to vest.”

Among Braswell’s attorneys in this suit is Ed Middlebrooks, former Republican State Senator and Anne Arundel County Councilman.

Smith, a Democratic Candidate for Mayor of Baltimore, has been on top or near the top of nearly all recent polls conducted among Baltimore Democratic Primary election voters. Smith has been running against a slew of Democrats, including incumbent Mayor Jack Young, disgraced former Mayor Sheila Dixon, City Council President Brandon Scott, and Thiru Vignarajah, the brother of failed gubernatorial candidate Krish Vignarajah.
