Why are you running for office?
I believe that my broad range of experience (Non-profit, coaching, parent, business person) can offer a level of expertise to the Board during what I believe is the most important time in our state’s educational history.
Who do you consider your political role model, and why?
Abraham Lincoln. Surrounded himself with the best people, not necessarily people who agreed with him.
What is your favorite book about politics and policy, and why?
Leadership in Turbulent Times. It’s outstanding analysis of 4 different Presidents and how they approached adversity.
What is your favorite book about education, and why?
Creative Schools by Ken Robinson. It’s a thorough analysis of what’s going right and wrong in our school systems. It promotes a return to the arts and humanities in order to build on students creativity.
What will be your top priority on the Board of Education?
Ensuring that we have Educational Equity across our entire school system.
What is the biggest issue facing your county schools?
Teachers pay, retention and support.
What is your position on the Kirwan Commission recommendations?
Fully support the recommendations.
What are the three biggest issues facing Maryland schools?
Teachers pay & retention, educational equity for all students and improved mental health services.
Have you read your county schools curriculum? If so, which parts do you like and which parts do you dislike?
I have not reviewed the entire curriculum. I do believe our Health curriculum needs to be expanded to address a number of different issues that our students are facing and it needs to be offered sooner and more often.
What is your position on school spending?
With proper supervision and accountability, school spending should be increased in order to address the needs I outlined above. Frederick County in particular needs to invest more into the educational system. Frederick County the fastest growing County in Maryland currently is funded 23rd out of 24 school districts. Let’s remember, money provided to schools is not an expense, it is an investment.
Please identify the three areas which you believe should be prioritized when it comes to school funding
What is your position on teacher tenure?
I support teacher tenure after a period of training and evaluation, currently 3 years in FCPS.
What is your position on standardized testing?
I would like to see a significant reduction in high stakes standardized testing.
What is your position on classroom size?
I support a reduction in class size, particularly in the K-5 grade levels where research indicates it provides the most significant impact. At all levels the addition of Teaching Assistants could offer a cost effective way to offset larger classes.
Do you believe the Board of Education should have taxation authority?
No, however I do believe local school boards should have the opportunity to educate those with that power on the reasoning behind the budgeting and possibly offer input on possible revenue streams.
