Montgomery County Council Invokes Godwin’s Law, Say People Opposed to Sanctuary Status are Neo-Nazis
In a stunning letter published by the Montgomery County Council writ-large, the Council accused fears regarding rapes by illegal immigrants in Montgomery County as being driven by “neo-Nazis”. As Mark Uncapher wrote here on Wednesday, Montgomery County Police have arrested at least seven undocumented immigrants on rape and other sex-related charges within a six-week period.
Here’s the letter that was submitted by the Council:

The letter includes a lot of fluff about how progressive and tolerant Montgomery County thinks it is, and the Council goes out of its way to not use the word “sanctuary” status or even imply that Montgomery County does not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Here’s the part of the letter that will undoubtedly be the most controversial.
There has been a lot inaccurate information spread by the White House, President Trump, Acting USCIS Director Ken Cuccinelli, local and national conservative news outlets and neo-Nazi sympathizers regarding our criminal justice system and its process. These individuals and organizations should be ashamed for spreading false information seeking to establish a baseless, illogical and xenophobic connection between a person’s failure to obtain legal status and their propensity to commit a sex crime.
So there’s a lot to break down here. Let’s start with the beginning:
There has been a lot inaccurate information spread by the White House, President Trump, Acting USCIS Director Ken Cuccinelli, local and national conservative news outlets and neo-Nazi sympathizers regarding our criminal justice system and its process.
What information that has been discussed is inaccurate? The information, reported by media outlets large and small, are that a number of recent rapes in Montgomery County have been committed and that police have apprehended illegal immigrants in the commission of them. Does the Council dispute this?
Is anybody questioning the criminal justice system? Is anybody concerned that the State’s Attorney and/or the Montgomery County Police Department are inhibiting prosecution? Has the Council just made this up?
Do the radical, left-wing Democrats who comprise the Montgomery County Council really think that labeling opponents of Montgomery County being a sanctuary county (which, frankly, is probably a majority of Montgomery County residents) think that calling people “neo-Nazi sympathizers” a really productive thing to say?
These individuals and organizations should be ashamed for spreading false information seeking to establish a baseless, illogical and xenophobic connection between a person’s failure to obtain legal status and their propensity to commit a sex crime.
Again, what is the “false information” that is being spread? Is there some question that illegal immigrants have been arrested and suspected for these crimes? Are there people in Maryland who are trying to imply a connection between legal status and additional criminal activity besides not having al legal presence?
The real issue with this letter is the fact that the Montgomery County Council decided to define their opponents using a bigoted paintbrush, accusing everybody who opposes their policies regarding immigration status as “neo-Nazi sympathizers.” The fact of the matter is that Montgomery County is a sanctuary county that does not cooperate with federal immigration authorities when it comes to providing immigration checks for those who have contact with county law enforcement. This is something that neither opponents of the sanctuary status or supporters of it dispute. The only dispute seems to be whether or not that sanctuary status should continue in light of this recent uptick in rapes with allegedly illegal perpetrators. Instead of arguing in a calm manner, the Montgomery County Council decided to publish a letter letting everybody see their bigotry
Now I’ll grant you that there are a lot of people out there who are anti-immigrant who want to kick everybody out of the country. I am certainly not one of those people, and most Maryland residents are not either. I and many others do not want to see people being rounded up for the sake of being rounded up regardless of their legal status. But most Maryland residents and yes most Montgomery County residents support the idea of checking the legal status of people who have come into contact with law enforcement, particularly those who are accused of a violent crime. It’s only out of touch, radical left-wing Democrats who support that kind of policy. And the fact that they immediately start pulling out pejoratives like this to defend themselves shows how indefensible sanctuary policies truly are.
As always, rational people will demand an apology from left-wing Democrats for saying offensive and bigoted things, and as always this apology will never occur. But the radicals on the Montgomery County Council cannot be ostriches forever. They cannot keep their head in the sand and pretend that they are doing the right thing for county residents. No amount of name-calling and deflection can fix that.
