Why are you running for office?
I have always had a genuine love for my local community. As adults, my wife and I chose to live where we both grew up, and where our family and friends live. After providing for my family, I believe my responsibility is to give back to my community. I am a litigator in my professional career, so advocacy comes naturally to me. I feel I have the skills, experience and convictions to advocate for our community’s needs and future as a member of the County Council.
Who do you consider your political role model, and why?
Locally: Delegate Nic Kipke. He’s been a mentor to me for years and an excellent example of a political leader who cares about his community on every issue from fixing potholes to passing major legislation. State-level: Governor Larry Hogan. He’s shown how to outsmart the opposition consistently while maintaining his principles. Historically: George Washington for his discipline and convictions, Abraham Lincoln for his courage and faith, and Theodore Roosevelt for his bravado and pragmatism.
What is your favorite book about politics and policy, and why?
Politics: Life’s a Campaign by Chris Matthews gives practical life advice about politics and understanding people. Policy: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand provides a fictional framework to expose the inherent fallacy in relying on government to solve all problems.
What will be your top priority in elected to this position?
Protect the character of our community through effective representation of the values of the citizens of District 3. Support initiatives that would restore traditional values to our government practices and way of life.
What is the biggest issue facing your county?
Development. The future of Anne Arundel County for the next 20+ years will be decided by the next General Development Plan and Comprehensive Rezoning. This will shape the lives of the next generation of Anne Arundel County citizens. My goal is to ensure that the plan put into place ensures they inherit the same strong community that I grew up in.
What is your position on taxes and spending?
Lower taxes whenever possible. Find opportunities to spend tax dollars more effectively and efficiently, then return the savings to the citizens. After all, it is your money.
What is your position on a county tax cap?
Do not change what isn’t broken; keep it.
What is your position on land use issues?
I would only support measured, transparent and carefully considered development. The process for development must include intensive community outreach and input from the citizens whose lives will be impacted.
What is your position on public safety?
Continue increasing investments in public safety. That includes ensuring pay and benefits packages for safety officials and first responders are competitive with surrounding jurisdictions. It means prosecuting criminals to deter future crime. It means supporting the 287G program which identifies criminal illegal immigrants arrested in Anne Arundel County. We must send a strong message to gang members and criminals that our community will not tolerate victimizing our citizens. It also means directing additional resources for mental health and addiction treatment.
