Why are you running for office?
Wicomico County School Board District1
Who do you consider your political role model, and why?
Yes I consider myself a political role model because i model the appropriate behavior and professionalism for the women we are recruiting to the party that think they are isolated. And my 15 year daughter has run unopposed for SGA Treasurer for her school and VP of her class for 2 years in a row despite her opposite political leanings I taught her to be a leader and think for herself…and lets face every young person has the idealism of a liberal until they get their first paying job.
What is your favorite book about politics and policy, and why?
I would have to say the Art of War Sun Tzu But Bud Fox said it best “Sun-tzu: If your enemy is superior, evade him. If angry, irritate him. If equally matched, fight, and if not split and reevaluate. ”
What is your favorite book about education, and why?
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards…I have taught birth thru college and pre education majors are the worst..that being said they want to know what it takes to get an “A” using this technique to use the right side of the brain makes them think outside the box and question. that is the best thing about the arts. It is so underrated but it flies across the curriculum. Stop teaching to the test and truly have your students THINK! There is the challenge .
What will be your top priority on the Board of Education?
Without hesitation I can say school safety is paramount . I have kept up with the no heat exposed electrical lines blocked fire exits across the state but in Wicomico County I am happy to say that we have resource officers now in every middle and high school. I can say that I have gone out of my way to keep my child in a public school in Wicomico County that has nurtured her talent in music, an honors band student, and National Honor Society sand French NHS as well and she has maintained a 4.425 GPA as a freshmen and playing varsity basketball at one of the most conservative rural schools our county has. Her teachers have been supportive and the PTA and Band as well as Sports BOOSTERS have held every fundraiser imaginable to get them where they are. Even thought this is out first fully elected school board ever and it is buy district. I have the majority minority district and I plan to help every district become as successful as my daughter’s public school district.
What is the biggest issue facing your county schools?
Parent engagement is the biggest problem I see coming from my constituents. They think why bother the Board will do what they want anyway.. And already I have seen that as an advocate . However there must be a cross over I am the only candidate with a child in the public school system. I have worked in my community with every population and with my educational back ground I speak the ” talk ” of the board and regulators however I can put in plain terms giving parents authority again over the administration to help their voices be heard. Parents have been ignored far too long.
What are the three biggest issues facing Maryland schools?
Wow 3… ok School safety is one
Teaching to test to satisfy grant requirements
Maintenance of effort funding….
School building and new construction
you can’t just say 3 ugh
Have you read your county schools curriculum? If so, which parts do you like and which parts do you dislike?
OK regarding curriculum Common Core is BS I have a Master’s as I said and guess what???? I hade to get someone to tutor my child in math..enough said
What is your position on school spending?
Spending until I look at the budget which has already been dictated for my first year I can not comment.
Please identify the three areas which you believe should be prioritized when it comes to school funding
Athletics, New School Construction, no third answer provided
What is your position on teacher tenure?
What is your position on standardized testing?
It is a minimum standard for data collection only not an indicator of the schools performance
What is your position on classroom size?
1 to 15 maybe 18
Do you believe the Board of Education should have taxation authority?
I am not sure our county pays that as it is and has granted the board pretty much what it needs and beyond and we have a revenue cap . Surrounding counties do …so it may take the burden off the county budget but just reallocate it. I need to do some more research before committing.
