Why are you running for office?
Frederick County Public Schools need a fresh perspective and I am concerned about the direction our schools have taken the last 8 years under the current leadership of the School Board.
Who do you consider your political role model, and why?
Ronald Reagan- President Reagan was a “citizen” politician and a strong representative for our Nation’s best interests during his Presidency.
What is your favorite book about politics and policy, and why?
Capitalism and Freedom by Milton Friedman- A strong defense of Free Markets and Free People
What is your favorite book about education, and why?
What will be your top priority on the Board of Education?
-School Safety is paramount in our schools in Frederick County and across the state of Maryland due to recent events in Parkland FL and Great Mills HS here in MD I support increased law enforcement and SROs in our schools, allowing staff/admin or retired military or police who have the proper training to carry voluntarily in the schools as an effective deterrent against possible threats in our schools.
What is the biggest issue facing your county schools?
Special Education is extremely important our County just failed a countywide audit concerning Special Ed and IEPs(Individualized Education Plans) which led to teachers and staff being moved or removed from County Schools. I believe that cutting from Special Education and cutting back on Special Ed Instructional Assistants in the classroom doesn’t help classes as a whole or students that are disabled or have special needs. We need to give Special Ed staff the tools to help these students succeed in the classroom and make sure we allocate funds for Special Education properly in the budget and not cut essential programs in this area that helps students that struggle in these areas like Dyslexic students/students with learning disabilities and or students with physical disabilities that affect their ability to learn in the classroom.
What are the three biggest issues facing Maryland schools?
-Concerns with Common Core Curriculum and Standardized Testing/PARCC
-Bullying and Discipline Policies
-Expanded Drug Awareness and Drug Education/Opioid Crisis
Have you read your county schools curriculum? If so, which parts do you like and which parts do you dislike?
Common Core as well as PARCC testing have become too centralized in our County curriculum and although some students might perform well in CC classes the vast majority struggle. On PARCC only about 4 in 10 Frederick County students have passed the exams. These exams are not an accurate indicator of student success in the classroom. We need to get back to the basics rather than “teach to the test” because it takes up valuable and essential instruction time for teachers and students.
What is your position on school spending?
-Cut Wasteful Spending
-More Transparent Board of Education/Tax Dollars pay for Public Education so citizens need to know where exactly the money is going.
-Prioritize items necessary for school funding.
Please identify the three areas which you believe should be prioritized when it comes to school funding
Security, Special Education, Vocational Skills
What is your position on teacher tenure?
We have several great teachers in FCPS we should measure teacher performance based on merit. Teacher tenure often unintentionally rewards teachers who are under performing with tenure rather than reward our best teachers academically with tenure and the benefits that come with it.
What is your position on standardized testing?
I am opposed to standardized testing/PARCC . as far as PARCC is concerned only about 4 in 10 Frederick County students have passed the exams. These exams are not an accurate indicator of student success in the classroom. While standardized testing has a place in the educational framework it should not be the ultimate authority on academic performance in the classroom because it does not account for the strengths and weaknesses of individual students rather it compares and contrast classes of students with their peers. For example when I was a student we did not have PARCC but we did have state tests nearly identical to the PARCC tests of today and despite the fact I was a consistent honor roll student throughout my academic because I was an average test taker I often scored average or below average on the state exams.
What is your position on classroom size?
This issue varies from school to school. If elected I will examine this issue further and work to make necessary changes based on a school to school basis.
Do you believe the Board of Education should have taxation authority?
