Why are you running for office?
To help. Carroll County is a wonderful place to live and raise a family and I want to help to keep it that way.
Who do you consider your political role model, and why?
I haven’t a specific role model. I respect all who do the job with integrity and a passion for working for the people they represent.
What is your favorite book about politics and policy, and why?
I don’t have a favorite.
What will be your top priority in elected to this position?
To see that the County is run as efficiently as possible. To advocate for the residents as well as the people that work for the County. To work hard to preserve the rural aspect that is loved by all. Country is why people want to move here to begin with and what most fear is slipping away.
What is the biggest issue facing your county?
Growth and infrastructure. Growth places a strain on everything from water and wastewater needs to public safety. Growth for the sake of growth is not wise. We should begin to focus more on infill and redevelopment and working with the municipalities for growth where greater density is possible.
Opioid and other drug addiction is an ever growing problem that needs answers that no one seems to have. Myself included. I will however work hard to understand the problem and offer whatever help I can.
What is your position on taxes and spending?
This is our number one job. We are elected to provide the best service with the lowest taxes possible. As a tax payer I want to keep taxes low, but my years in Union Bridge Government has shown me that isn’t always possible. What we can do is to weigh every expenditure and trim costs wherever possible.
What is your position on a county tax cap?
I would need to study this further to offer an informed opinion.
What is your position on land use issues?
These issues are always difficult. As a person that believes in individual rights, I struggle with telling someone what they can and can’t do with property that they own. However, zoning laws are as important as they are needed. The world is not as large as it once was and land use affects everyone in one way or another.
What is your position on public safety?
This is one of the main reasons government exists. We gave the job of public safety to our police forces, but lately we have made that job nearly impossible. We must do a better job of supporting law enforcement while these issues are worked through. I was raised to believe that police officers are to be respected and that they are my friend. I still believe that.
