Why are you running for office?
I am running for county commissioner to use my business skills to maintain and improve Washington County as a great place to live and work: financial prudence, attention to detail, honesty and integrity, school security, farmland preservation, and government employee accountability.
Who do you consider your political role model, and why?
Ronald Reagan: true conservative, kind and gentle but strong, great orator, all-round great person who also loved the outdoors and good hard work as do I.
What is your favorite book about politics and policy, and why?
What will be your top priority in elected to this position?
School security, gun control, farmland preservation
What is the biggest issue facing your county?
School security, preparation of the work force coming out of our high schools to match up with the requirements of employers.
What is your position on taxes and spending?
I have always done more with less and I expect government to do the same. My personal life is one of being a spendthrift, my campaign will also reflect that value, and I am not one to search for increased tax revenues which are so disheartening and demeaning to my electorate.
What is your position on a county tax cap?
What is your position on land use issues?
Land zoned agriculturally needs to be maintained as such. Current municipality boundaries need to be maintained as such. Gobbling up farmland a little bit here and a little bit there means in 200 years all of Washington County as we currently know it will be nothing but a large urban conglomerate. People living in the county want to continue living the rural lifestyle that currently exists. I hope to maintain that in every way possible. Just because a farm ceases operations with any particular owner doesn’t mean it should suddenly be rezoned and developed. Without farmland there will be no way to feed our own citizens let alone the rest of the world in 200 years.
What is your position on public safety?
I believe everyone has the right to own firearms. I do not believe that assault rifles should be in the hands of the average citizen, however. Those weapons are built for army and lawmen who are under attack by large numbers of enemy opposition. Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods are doing the right thing by refusing to sell such weapons and all other gun retailers, new and used, should do the same. I would keep the age to own a gun at 18 as long as there could and should be a ban on assault rifles even being available for purchase to the general public.
My biggest safety concern right now, and my prime motivation for running for commissioner, is to assure that the schools under my command, will be bastions of security. Prisons are currently fortresses to keep the prisoners in, my schools will be fortresses to keep the students within safe from any and all unexpected assault. I WILL NOT ARM TEACHERS. Rather, increased security will be on hand as students enter for the day and once in, they will stay in. Should they go out for any reason, it will only be in areas protected by adequate fencing and security. Since I will be voting on each and every budget presented by the county board of education, I will be looking for adequate and increased budgeting in the areas of security each and every time. If I feel it is inadequate, I will make the issue known to my electorate and why I feel that way, and strive for further enhancement. I will not wait for Washington County to have a “school shooting event” before I do something. The time to act is now, as soon as I am elected. The parents who help elect me will NEVER put their children on the bus or drop them off at school for that day’s learning without knowing that I, WALLY MCCLURE, am looking out for their precious children’s safety come hell and high water! Without adequate school security, NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.
