What are the three biggest issues facing Maryland schools?
Politicized learning, over testing, unfunded mandates
Have you read your county schools curriculum? If so, which parts do you like and which parts do you dislike?
I have read parts of curriculum, it’s not user friendly. You can’t access curriculum from the school website without an account. You have to request to go in and see the resources and curriculum. I just reviewed the Health curriculum for elementary school. I like that it’s colorful. I don’t like that some of it is inappropriate and should be taught by licensed psychologists, not elementary school teachers. I dislike that it’s written around standards created by corporate outsiders. I dislike how some of the curriculum is “canned” and teachers read from scripts.
What is your position on school spending?
By county – we have line items that say “Other – $127,000,000” that’s unacceptable. I don’t think schools are careful enough with their dollars, are too eager to sign on to a grant without thinking it through and put more toward the adults than the children the money is intended for.
Please identify the three areas which you believe should be prioritized when it comes to school funding
Arts Programs, Curriculum Development, Music Programs
What is your position on teacher tenure?
No one should be tenured.
What is your position on standardized testing?
They aren’t capable of measuring the true success of a person.
What is your position on classroom size?
A good teacher can teach anywhere given the right tools.
Do you believe the Board of Education should have taxation authority?
