Red Maryland Post-Session Survey: Kathy Szeliga

What is your top legislative achievement for the 2017 General Assembly Session?

Defeating the Sanctuary State bill. I collected almost 10,000 signatures against this bill. Public outcry from the publicity many of us generated against this bill were instrumental in defeating this measure in the Senate.

What are some of your other legislative achievements for the 2017 General Assembly Session?

Helping Governor Hogan pass his legislative agenda, including keeping spending down and working towards tax relief for everyone.

What is your top legislative disappointment for the 2017 General Assembly Session?

No broad based tax relief for average Maryland families. Hopefully, we can get broad based tax relief next year!

We asked before Session about your top legislative priorities for 2017. How do you feel about your efforts to achieve those priorities?

Great! We were able to keep House and Senate leadership from raising taxes. We brought spending under control. Additionally, we had more reasonable bi-partisanship in Annapolis than I’ve seen in my 7 years in the House of Delegates.

Please explain your vote on House Bill 631.

HB 631 was amended significantly and is a good consumer friendly anti-price gouging bill. Maryland Medical assistance prescription drugs are taxpayer funded. If a manufacturer or drug wholesaler increases the cost of generic prescription drugs more than 50% in one year, Md Medical Assistance may report that to the Attorney General’s office. The AG’s office will investigate. Should there be a conviction of price gouging, the manufacturer or wholesaler will honor the price from the previous year and there will be a $1000 fine. Keeping prescriptions affordable to the public and to taxpayer subsidized programs is important. The huge increases in the Epi-Pen and 5,000% increase of Daraprim ($13.50 – $750.00) show that greed has impacted the prescription drug market.

Will you be running for re-election in 2018? Why or why not?

Yes. We have more work to do in Annapolis and I am working hard to help get Governor Larry Hogan re-elected and continue the positive CHANGES in Maryland.
