The State of the World and the State of the Union
A year ago, President Obama stood before both houses of Congress and declared that the state of the union was strong. He claimed that the nation was turning the page after “[f]ifteen years that dawned with terror touching our shores; that unfolded with a new generation fighting two long and costly wars; that saw a vicious recession spread across our nation and the world.”
He said, “America, for all that we’ve endured; for all the grit and hard work required to come back; for all the tasks that lie ahead, know this: The shadow of crisis has passed, and the State of the Union is strong. At this moment—with a growing economy, shrinking deficits, bustling industry, and booming energy production—we have risen from recession freer to write our own future than any other nation on Earth.”
After a tumultuous 2015 that saw terrorist attacks abroad and at home, a declining stock market, and a stalled economy, what will Mr. Obama say now?
The world today is not safe. The combat mission in Afghanistan that Obama declared complete is a complete failure. Following the Iraq playbook of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, al-Qaida training camps are sprouting up all over Afghanistan.

The world economy is sliding further into the recession. As the price of commodities collapses, the countries whose economies rely on the export of commodities revenue suffers the most. Central bank efforts to avoid the consequences of the business cycle are having devastating effects. For example, South American economies are in big trouble, especially Venezuela that has a 200% inflation rate. The murder rate is on the rise there and our neighbor to the south became the most murderous continent on earth.
The outlook for the Middle Eastern countries is gloomy is well. Even wealthy Saudi Arabia is running record budget deficit of $98 billion dollars and had to increase the energy and utility prices for its citizens. It is not hard see scenarios where extremists can seize the opportunity to rise to power in the name of a hijacked religion. U.S. foreign policy under both parties has failed to recognize that you cannot change entire continents by exporting social experiments “democracy” either voluntarily or by force.
The Obama administration apparently does not fully comprehend the challenges that face them. The followers of ISIS, aka Daesh, will use all means necessary to destabilize the entire world and that includes using refugees that it has pushed from their homes as cover. The Obama administration has failed to have an honest conversation with American people on its reliance on proxy wars and endless supplies of weapons to various fanatical groups.
Instead, the left has sought to demonize the governors of the states that asked for common sense security checks before any Syrian refugee get moved to their state by trying to portray this request as a refusal to aid refugees. The reality is there is no way to check if a refugee is a real refugee because there is no database to even verify identities. Once someone is in the country legally or illegally they are free to go any state especially to “sanctuary” jurisdictions including here in Montgomery County, Maryland.
The failure of radical Islamists to inflict a large scale mass causality attack in the United States since September 11, 2001, can only be seen as luck considering the American borders are unprotected. The American government does not even have a clue how many people have overstayed their visas and according to multiple reports the amount of unapprehend sex traffickers, drugs and weapons that coming through the borders are overwhelming.
Obama’s response? In the event of the last terrorist attack in December 2015 in San Bernardino, Democrats pulled out their old playbook to “never let a serious crisis go to waste” and chose to focus on the left’s obsession with the second amendment. One hundred and twenty-three Democrats co-sponsored Bill H.R. 4269 to ban self-defense arms on December 16, 2015. Among the Representatives that co-sponsored the bill were Delaney (D-MD- 6), Van Hollen (D-MD-8); Cummings (D-MD-7); Edwards (D-MD-4); Sarbanes (D-MD-3); Ruppersberger (D-MD-2).
Not to be outdone by Congressional Democrats, Mr. Obama will announce his own executive action attacking the second amendment on Tuesday January 5, 2016.
A few days later, on January 12, 2016, President Obama will stand again before the Congress and American people to give the State of the Union address. Maybe he will announce policies to confront the significant challenges the nation faces. But more likely, he will sing from the Democrats’ songbook and come for Americans’ constitutional rights.
