Senator J. Robert Hooper Resigns

J. Robert Hooper, a Republican state senator from Harford County, announced this morning that he is resigning his position because of health issues.

A senator since 1999, the 71-year-old Hooper has been battling colon cancer in recent years.

Hooper said that the demands of the current special session of the General Assembly convinced him that he could not endure the full session that begins in January. His resignation takes effect Dec. 31.

The seat will not change hands. The Republican Central Committe for Harford County will recommend a replacement to the governor.
